OVERVIEW CanSearch is an experimental demonstration implementation of the origin role for both the ISO 10163 Search and Retrieve (SR) application protocol standard and for the ANSI Z39.50 Information Retrieval (IR) protocol standard. This experimental implementation does not correctly display the full ALA character set. See the User Manual for more details. It offers only rudimentary record display and file handling functions. A priori knowledge of options supported by target systems will often be required for effective use of this software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS CanSearch software requires the following hardware and software: - Microsoft Windows 3.1 - 386 or better processor - 4Mb of memory - TCP/IP Access using the WINSOCK standard. A current version of one of the following packages is recommended; - Super-TCP for Windows from Frontier Technologies Corporation - ChameleonNFS TCP/IP for Windows from Net Manage These files should have been included in your compressed arhive file 'cansrch.taz'. GETTING STARTED To make CanSearch accessible from Windows perform the following steps: 1. The file README.1ST contains instruction on how to uncompress these files. 2. Start Windows 3.1 3. Ensure that no file group windows are open. 4. Select "File"/"New" from the Program Manager menu. The "New Program Object" dialog should appear with "Program group" selected under new. Press OK. 5. Type "CanSearch" in the Description field and press OK. This should create a program group with the name you typed in. 6. Select "File"/ "New" from the Program Manager menu. The "New Program Object" dialog should appear with "Program item" selected under new. Press OK. 7. Select browse from the "Program Item Properties" dialog. Select the File marked "C:\" from the directory menu then scroll that same list, if necessary, and select the directory marked "irtool". Then, again from the same list, select the directory "origin". Then select the directory "bin". At this point the file "uaep.exe" should appear in the "File Name" window. 8. Select the "uaep.exe" file. You should return to the "Program Item Properties" dialog. 9. Change the "Description" field to read "CanSearch" 10. Select OK. The program CanSearch should appear in your new program group. 11. To print the user manual simply send the uncompressed postscript file to any postscript printer.
