Notes for the 286 version of Angband 2.7.9v3 (1/24/96): First of all, the executable is built using overlays, since the amount of code and data together would not fit into a 640K. Therefore, it helps to have lots of conventional memory available, since this should help speed the game up. However, the overlay algorithm will use XMS or EMS memory to hold code not currently running. If your computer has XMS or EMS, enable it! The game will run much faster. If you've played Angband 2.7.x on other systems, you might find a few features missing from this version. This was unavoidable since the game with the entire feature set wouldn't run on a standard 16-bit DOS machine. The most noticeable lack will probably be monster descriptions. Other were also disabled to save memory. Perhaps in a later version some can be re-enabled. Installation: You *must* unzip using PKUNZIP's -d switch to preserve the directory structure. The first time the game is run (and each time you upgrade to a new version), it creates raw data files (in "lib\data\") from the textual template data (in "lib\edit\"). This may take a few minutes on slower machines, so be patient. Note that if you change certain options, including the "roguelike commands" option, and any "visual display" options, you must then use the "redraw screen" command (^R) to activate the changes. There are no warranties what-so-ever. If it breaks, you have two pieces. For questions about Angband in general, read the Usenet Newsgroup "rec.games.roguelike.angband", or see the Official Angband Home Page at "http://www.voicenet.com/~benh/Angband/". The current maintainer is Ben Harrison (benh@voicenet.com), send him bug reports and suggestions and stuff. The 286 version was compiled by Roland J. Roberts (jay@map.com), send him email thanking him for making a DOS-286 version.
