Here is a new version of the Patch of User-Editable Files, as created by Jonathan Ellis (alias "JLE"). Note that it DOES NOT REQUIRE RECOMPILING but can be used by anyone who is capable of copying a file from one directory to another. Instructions are shown below. Questions and comments to: jonathan@franz-liszt.freeserve.co.uk. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE... (1) Download the patch and unzip it. (2) Delete the contents of the \lib\data directory in your current copy of Angband. (3) Replace the files in the \lib\edit directory in your current copy of Angband with those from the "edit" directory of this patch. (4) Replace the files in your original \lib\help directory with those from the "help" directory of this patch. (5) Replace the files in your original \lib\file directory with those from the "file" directory of this patch. (6) Start a game - either with a new savefile, or by importing an old savefile from either a standard Angband game of ANY version number, or from a version of Angband 2.9.2 or 2.9.3 that used a previous version of this patch. (Versions of the JLE patch from Angband 2.9.1 and earlier are not suitable for mid-game patching: and either patching or upgrading will mess up random artifacts even between different versions of vanilla Angband, so it is recommended you do not apply this patch in the *middle* of a game with randarts. (7) Have fun... Features include: (1) Compared to standard vanilla Angband: over 60 new monsters, about 20 new artifacts, a dozen new types of ego-item and a few new standard items. And one new player race, the Kobold. Shoot down Pit Fiends and Elder Vampires with Silver Arrows from the Short Bow of Amras or Bolts of Venom from the Heavy Crossbow of Umbar, or protect yourself from enemies with the Jewelled Crown of Numenor or the Shield of Deflection of Gil-galad - or hack them to death with weapons of Fury, or blades of Gondolin. Wear a Crown of Serenity to keep your mind clear of all noises, confusions and distractions, or a Shield of Preservation to protect your body, soul and equipment. Use the power of the Palantir of Westernesse to see all your enemies and map all areas, but also beware, for those monsters which you detect will be alerted to your presence. Hide from the flocks of Crebain crows, used by the forces of evil as spies: and never wake up those evil insects, the Neekerbreekers... (2) It is fully compatible with vanilla Angband 2.9.3: meaning, that this patch can be installed at any time, even mid-game, and there should be no ill effects - with the exception that graphics are not yet supported for some of the new monsters and items, which will therefore appear as ASCII even if you are playing in "graphics" mode. Most importantly, monster memory and the graphics of existing monsters and items are not messed up. (3) As usual, it DOES NOT REQUIRE RECOMPILING but can be installed by anyone who is capable of copying a file from one directory to another - see instructions above. (4) Now that the compatibility problems have been sorted out, it is also fully compatible with games using the *previous* version of this patch, for vanilla 2.9.2. It is not, and will NEVER be, properly compatible with versions which were intended for Angband 2.9.1 and earlier: but future versions of this patch will be compatible with all versions from 2.9.2 onwards, and with all standard vanilla versions of the game. (It is not possible, and never will be, to upgrade from a "patched" older version to an "unpatched" newer version.) (5) It also contains various lines which are commented out, in some of the files: these represent features which have not (yet?) been coded into the game, but which I would nevertheless like to see in future versions. Various artifact activations are suggested, along with a couple of flags for item and monster powers - particularly, two more suggested drawbacks for artifacts: DRAIN_HP and DRAIN_MANA. All flags which are not part of the standard vanilla game are on commented-out lines. (If you wish to see these items and monsters with the actual powers active, play Psiband instead, as they are all present there. -JLE) (6) A full list of the changes is present in the "readme" file in the "edit" folder.
