About IDEF-0 Diagrams

During the 1970s, the U.S. Air Force Program for Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) identified the need for better analysis and communication techniques for people involved in the improvement of manufacturing productivity.

As a result, the ICAM program developed a series of techniques known as IDEF (ICAM Definition) techniques.

These techniques, which include IDEF-0, are used to produce "function models." A function model is a structured representation of the functions, activities, or processes within a modeled system or subject area.
