Gilligan's Island for Flight Simulator ====================================== Welcome to Gilligan's Island! ----------------------------- I have been a Flight Simulator fanatic (or should I say a "pilot wannabe") and a fan of the TV sitcom "Gilligan's Island" for quite some time, and thought to myself "Why hasn't anyone ever created scenery for Gilligan's Island?" . Several combat flight simulator's (such as Microprose's "1942: The Pacific Air War") have "easter eggs" in the programs refering to Gilligan's Island, but none in Microsoft Flight Simulator. I've been flying MS Flight Simulator since version 2.0 (back in 1989), but have never created any scenery for it from scratch... until now . The result is a freeware Gilligan's Island scenery pack for MS Flight Simulator versions 5.1, 95, and 98! This scenery is a "real-world" depiction of "Gilligan's Island" from the popular TV sitcom. The location and style of the island and scenery objects are based on data from the Internet and directly from the TV show. The position of the island is latitude 10 North and longitude 140 West (which was derived from Episode 18 of the TV show, "X Marks the Spot"), and is about 1240 NM southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii. The altitude (0 feet MSL) and magnetic variation (09E (-9)) are based on real-world coordinates. The Island ---------- The island features nine species of palm and other tropical trees, an animated campfire, mountains (including "Howell's Hills), the castaways' huts, a volcano, the S.S. Minnow, Wrongway Feldman's biplane "The Spirit of the Bronx" (from Episodes 5 and 24, "Wrongway Feldman" and "The Return of Wrongway Feldman"), and even the castaways themselves! There are quite a few comical references from the TV show in this scenery such as the "SOL" flaming logs from Episode 90, "Splashdown" (does anyone remember that one? ), a totem pole (from Episode 91, "High Man on the Totem Pole"), Howell's putting green, and quick sand. Also, it's been reported that Wrongway traded in his biplane for a brand-spanking new Cessna 182 and can sometimes be sighted tooling around the island, but we're not sure about that one . Compatibility ------------- The Gilligan's Island scenery should be fully compatible with Flight Simulator versions 5.1, 95, and 98, although several of the features may not be available depending on your version of FlightSim. The "Entertainment/Formation Flying" feature (see below) is one example as it was removed in the later versions of FlightSim (I'm not sure of which one's though). No "Exclude" files are necessary for the proper operation of this scenery, and it shouldn't conflict with any of the default FlightSim scenery because of the island's remote location. FS2000 Compatibility -------------------- Unfortunately as far as Flight Simulator 2000 is concerned, "your results may vary". Many of the night-only effects do not work properly (or not at all), and none of the ATIS messages will be displayed. The "Visual Flight Track" (see below) will be constantly displayed regardless of whether "Flight Analysis" is enabled or not. To disable the "Visual Flight Track" in FS2000, set the "Scenery Complexity" to "Normal" (or lower), you won't miss anything as I have designed all of the scenery to be displayed at any detail level. Also, taxiing in most of the ground-level areas result in a "splash", or result in the aircraft not being able to taxi at all (as if your aircraft was "stuck in the mud"), and the "Landme" features were completely removed in FS2000. Nevertheless, even in FS2000 the island is a very beautiful scenic area to fly in (and to do a little mountain aerobatic flying ). Files in this Package --------------------- This is a complete list of all of the files that are contained in this package. It briefly explains the purpose of each file, and the specific directory the file will need to be located in on your hard drive. All of these files and subdirectories will be extracted and created in the "\SCENERY" subdirectory (located within your main Flight Simulator directory) upon unzipping the GILLIGAN.ZIP archive. Use this section as a reference during the installation process described in full detail in the "Installation" section below. Note: I absolutely *REFUSE* to use Microsoft's term "folder" . Substitute "folder" anywhere "directory" is mentioned in this documentation if you don't understand the meaning of "directory". Installation ------------ Before installing the Gilligan's Island scenery pack, you may first want to print out this document for reference during the installation process. There are quite a few files that need to be located in specific directories on your hard drive, and a little bit of setup to perform from within FlightSim. There is no "automatic installation" program, just a little bit of hard work on your part (after all, no one said that it was gonna be easy to rescue all of those castaways ). During the installation you may also want to refer to the "Files in this Package" section above, as it briefly explains the purpose of each file and the specific directory the file will need to be located in on your hard drive. For any specific Flight Simulator scenery installation questions, refer to the "Scenery and Location" chapter in your "Flight Simulator Pilot's Handbook". If you have ever installed any user created scenery for Flight Simulator before, the process for this package is similar, you're already one step ahead. If not, here are step-by-step instructions on how to do so. 1. First, copy the GILLIGAN.ZIP archive that you downloaded into your main Flight Simulator directory (usually "C:\FLTSIM", "C:\FLTSIM5", "C:\FS95", "C:\Program Files\Flight Simulator 98", or something similar depending on your version of FlightSim). 2. Unzip the archive. If you are using PKUNZIP for DOS (yes, DOS is still alive and kicking even in Windows 98 SE, and I still use it ), make sure that you add the command line parameter "-D" to recreate the subdirectories that are contained in the archive (i.e. "PKUNZIP GILLIGAN.ZIP -D "). If you are using another utility such as WinZip, make sure that you check the option "Use Directory Names" and unzip the archive INTO your main Flight Simulator directory. This unzipping process will create several subdirectories wihin your Flight Simulator directories as listed in the "Files in this Package" section above. 3. It is highly recommended that you back up your existing WORLD.VIS file before continuing. This file can be found in the "\SCENERY" subdirectory of your main Flight Simulator directory. 4. Before you can use the new Gilligan's Island scenery, you must first set up the scenery files from within Flight Simulator's "Scenery Library". To do so, start up your version of Flight Simulator and do the following: * Flight Simulator 5.1 * In Flight Simulator's menu go to "Scenery", "Scenery Library" (click "OK" on the warning prompt), "Scenery Area Files", and then click on "Add". Then, fill in the sections with following data: Scenery Area File(s): x:\fltsim\SCENERY\GILLIGAN\SCENERY\*.BGL Scenery Area Title: Gilligan's Island Scenery Area Type: Local Scenery Area Layer: 0001 Scenery Area Status: Active (click on the "Active" checkbox) Note: In the "Scenery Area File(s)" section above "x:\fltsim\" refers to the drive letter and complete path of where your copy of Flight Simulator is actually installed (i.e. "C:\FLTSIM\", "C:\GAMES\FLTSIM5\", "C:\GAMES\FS95", "C:\Program Files\Flight Simulator 98\", etc...). Substitute the correct drive letter and complete path for "x:\fltsim\" in that section, and fill in the rest of the data exactly as shown. Click on the "OK" buttons to save the data and return back to your aircraft's cockpit. * Flight Simulator 95/98 * In Flight Simulator's menu go to "World", "Scenery Library" (click "OK" on the warning prompt), "Scenery Area Files", and then click on "Add". * Flight Simulator 2000 * In Flight Simulator's menu go to "World", "Scenery Library", and click on "Add Area". Then, browse through the directories on your hard drive and select the subdirectory "\GILLIGAN" that will be located in the subdirectory "\SCENERY" from within your main Flight Simulator 2000 installation directory. Click on the "OK" buttons to save the data and return back to your aircraft's cockpit. 5. Other files as listed in the "Files in this Package" section above (startup situations, video demos, adventures, etc...) will need to be copied to their respective subdirectories within your main Flight Simulator directory manually. If you haven't already done so, exit FlightSim now and copy the remaining files to their correct subdirectories. 6. You're now ready to rescue the castaways! Haze and Textures ----------------- Included with this scenery pack is a new "haze palette" file (GILLIGAN.HAZ) that will be in effect anytime you are in the vicinity of the island (up to 33 NM or so out from the island). It GREATLY reduces the "gray-wall" effect in the eariler versions of Flight Simulator anytime that visibility is limited, and provides a much nicer foggy effect than the stock haze palette (FS5.HAZ) that ships with those versions of FlightSim. If you wish, you can copy this file to the "\TEXTURE" subdirectory within your main Flight Simulator directory and use it globally with ALL of your Flight Simulator scenery. After copying the file, it must be renamed to "FS5.HAZ" within that subdirectory (overwriting the existing file). You may want to make a back up the existing FS5.HAZ file first, in case you don't like the new replacement. Also included with this scenery pack are replacement CLOUDS.R8, STORMY.R8, and WATER.R8 texture files. The CLOUDS.R8 texture replaces all of the regular clouds in Flight Simulator, while the STORMY.R8 texture replaces the Cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds. The new cloud textures look a MILLION times better than the originals. The replacement water texture file provides a very subtle occasional flicker of light when dusk arrives. If you wish, you can also copy these files to the "\TEXTURE" subdirectory within your main Flight Simulator directory (overwriting the existing files), to enhance all of the water and clouds in Flight Simulator. Again, you may want to make a back up the existing files first, in case you don't like the new replacements. Visiting the Island ------------------- This scenery will add entries to the "World/Airports" menu or the "Goto Airport" menu from within Flight Simulator (depending on the version of FlightSim that you are using). In FS98 and FS2000 you must select "Sceneries 6.0 and Before" for Gilligan's Island to appear in the "Goto Airport" menu. From these menus you can warp straight to the parking area or either one of the runways, ready for takeoff. You can also use the included startup situation file GILLIGAN.STN to position your aircraft in the parking area at dawn, set for maximum realism (the way I like it ). Gilligan's Island Airstrip -------------------------- Gilligan's Island Airstrip (GIA ) features a nice 3500x100 dirt strip with ILS runways 09/27 and VASI lighting (I think that the castaways use "tiki torches" for the VASI lights ), and inner, middle, and outer marker beacons. The island has a complete set of navigational aids consisting of three NDBs (two of them for use as LOMs for ILS runways 09 and 27) and a VOR to make that nice scenic flight/rescue from Honolulu a bit easier. Gilligan's Island Airstrip ATIS can be received on 118.00. You also may want to randomly tune in to several of the other COM frequencies (119.00 - 136.00), you might actually receive a weak transmission from some of the castaways themselves! The Professor is pretty good at rigging up that old white AM radio to do all sorts of stuff . Another feature of the airstrip is "Landme" for *ANY* aircraft. For the versions of FlightSim that support "Landme", up to 33 NM or so out from the island this feature will be enabled and works for any aircraft in FlightSim (not just the Cessna 182). Keep in mind that "Landme" doesn't work too well for the "big irons" or an F-16, but hey... THIS IS A SMALL DIRT STRIP ANYWAY ! This leads me to briefly discuss the technique of dirt strip takeoffs and landings in FS51 and FS95. Since the runway is a dirt strip, you'll really have to handle the yoke with "kid gloves" when taking off and landing. Both FS51 and FS95 are infamous for exaggerating the bumpiness and roughness of the dirt and grass strips within the scenery. For some strange reason/bug this only applies to the default Cessna 182. Fuel is available in the parking area. Do you see that 55 gallon drum with the spigot on the front ? Simply taxi beside it to refuel your aircraft. You'll have to siphon the fuel yourself though, everything is "self-serve" here on the island . Flight Shop Adventures ---------------------- Included in this scenery package are two Flight Shop Air Traffic Control guided adventures taking you from Honolulu International Airport (HNL) to Gilligan's Island Airstrip (GIA) via Kaneohe Bay (Mokapu). One is for the Cessna 182 (heh, "a three hour tour"... NOT!) and the other is for the Learjet. Be careful when landing that Lear on GIA's dirt strip though . The reason that I chose Kaneohe Bay as the waypoint for the adventures is because slightly to your left after departing Honolulu Intl. (after clearing the mountains), you'll notice a small splotch of green in Oahu's Kaneohe Bay. It's Mokuoloe Island (a.k.a. "Coconut Island"), the REAL Gilligan's Island used for all of the distant island camera shots in the TV show, as well as where the pilot movie was filmed! The adventures work just fine with the stock Hawaii scenery that ships with the FS51 CD, but unfortunately you won't actually be able to see Kaneohe Bay or Mokuoloe Island. They're not in the default stock Hawaii scenery. Nevertheless, ATC will guide you through the area just fine. To use the Flight Shop adventures with FlightSim 5.1, you'll need an installed copy of BAO's "Flight Shop". To use the adventures with a higher version of Flight Simulator, you'll first have to convert them with the "Flight Shop Converter" (a.k.a. the "Aircraft and Adventure Converter") for your specific version of FlightSim. In addition, for the higher versions of FlightSim you will need to obtain a set of the Flight Shop ADVWAV sound files which can be downloaded from several prominent FlightSim sites on the Internet at no cost. I *HIGHLY* recommend the replacement sound sets FEMATC.ZIP (created by Jessica Danielle Darling) and ATCSOUND.ZIP (created by Jody Gregg). They are MUCH better than the originals. In addition to the Flight Shop adventure default keyboard commands, there is a new feature, "Altitude Change Request" when flying these adventures. Before requesting a change of altitude you first must have been instructed by ATC to "Contact Center" (in these adventures, "Center" is 133.20 on your COM radio). To request an altitude change, press "Ctrl Shift +" on your keyboard to request a change of 2000 feet higher, or "Ctrl -" on your keyboard to request a change of 2000 feet lower. "+" and "-" refer to the top row of keys on your keyboard, NOT the numeric keypad. There is a 65% chance that ATC will grant your request. Use caution if the "Flight Plan Auto Pilot" (FPAP) is engaged when requesting a lower altitude change at 2000 feet MSL, as your new cleared altitude would then be 0 feet MSL and the result would NOT be pretty . The files HNLGIA-C.TXT and HNLGIA-L.TXT are printable flight plans for the two Flight Shop adventures. The files HNLGIA-C.STN and HNLGIA-L.STN are startup situations for the adventures to position your aircraft in the parking area at HNL at dawn and are set for maximum realism. If you don't like any of the settings, simply start the situation, make your setting changes, and then resave the situation with the same filename. In the future, anytime that you fly the adventure your new settings will be in effect. Also included are the files AIRPORTS.TXT, NAVAIDS.TXT, and RUNWAYS.TXT. These are Airport/Navaid Database import files for use with ATC Workshop. Simply use the FSFSIMP.EXE utility that shipped with Flight Shop to import these data files into ATC Workshop's Airport/Navaid Database to create your own ATC guided flights to the island from anywhere on the globe. Visual Flight Track ------------------- This scenery has a special built-in visual "flight track" (HNLGIA.BGL) to guide you from Honolulu Intl. 08R to Gilligan's Island Airstrip 09 (or vice-versa). The visual flight track appears as a highly visible red line. Simply follow the line and you can take the entire flight without the use of any ATC or navaids! To display the visual flight track, enable "Flight Analysis", "Course Tracking", and "Display Course" from within FlightSim. Also, FlightSim's "Scenery Complexity" must be set to "Very Dense" for the flight track to appear. Viola! A bright red line appears that you can follow to your destination! Video Demos ----------- The files GILLAERO.VID and GILLDEMO.VID are two video demos to show off the island and my aerobatic flying skills (or lack thereof ). GILLAERO.STN and GILLDEMO.STN are "setup" situation files for the two video demos. Load the respective situation BEFORE running the videos to setup the type of aircraft, views, and time of day for each of the videos. Formation Flying ---------------- The files _FORM1.VID and FORM1.STN are meant to be used as replacements for Flight Simulator's "Formation Flying" in the "Entertainment" menu. I'm not sure which versions of FlightSim still actually have "Formation Flying", but it's a lot of fun in FS51. If your version of FlightSim still supports it, you'll have MUCH more of a challenge than any of the stock ones . To use the new "Formation Flying" files, first back up your existing _FORM1.VID and FORM1.STN files. These two files are located within your main Flight Simulator installation directory in the "\VIDEOS" and the "\SITUATIO" subdirectories respectively. Then copy the new replacement files to the correct directories as listed above. After copying the files, fire up FlightSim and go to the "Entertainment" menu. Select "Formation Flying", and then select "San Francisco Obstacle Course". You'll now be following a fellow pilot flying through the "Gilligan's Island Obstacle Course" instead . Have fun! Charts and Maps --------------- The file ISLAND.GIF is the original "topographic" map downloaded from the Internet at http://www.gilligansisle.com that I based most of the features of the island on. I cropped and resized the image to 600x381 pixels, imported it into Tom Hiscox's EXCELLENT program, "Airport v2.60", and then set the scale to 19 pixels per 100 meters. The files CHART-1.GIF, CHART-2.GIF, and CHART-3.GIF are a set of aeronautical charts at different scales for the island suitable for printing created with Ted Wright's EXCELLENT program "NAV". All navaids and ILS beacons are shown in these charts. The files GIA09-I.IAP and GIA27-I.IAP are a set of instrument approach plates for Gilligan's Island Airstrip ILS runways 09 and 27 created with George Lorsche's EXCELLENT program, "Final Approach". The files GIA09-I.GIF and GIA27-I.GIF are GIF format image versions of these instrument approach plates suitable for printing. Navigational Aids ----------------- The following is a complete list of the navigational aids that are located in the Gilligan's Island scenery, as well as the Kaneohe Bay navaids that are pertinent to the HNL to GIA Flight Shop adventures. The Kaneohe Bay navaids are contained in Flight Simulator's default Hawaii scenery (FS95 or higher). ID Name Freq. The Disclaimer -------------- (Gotta have it this day in age when people sue M.D. Lounge for burning their legs from hot coffee they spilled on their lap while driving their car, when they SHOULD be watching the blasted road!) Now THERE'S a mouthfull ... This scenery package and any other material contained within it will not willingly cause any damage or harm to your computer, but if it does, sorry you're on your own. I am not responsible or liable if you accidently reformat your hard drive, you completely erase your Flight Simulator installation from your computer, you crash your aircraft, you have your pilot's license revoked by the FAA, your aircraft runs out of fuel, etc..., etc..., but the scenery package sure works great on mine! In Conclusion ------------- I spent the better part of my life for the last four weeks designing this scenery (three days just on this documentation), and I hope you enjoy flying in it as much as I enjoyed creating it (i.e. throwing my hands up in the air in total frustration, banging my head against wall, learning some new cuss words, etc... ). Questions, comments, bugs, or general rants? Drop me a line via email. Project sources available upon request. Anyway, 'nuff said! Get to flying, those castaways are waiting to be rescued!
