NOTES



Aerocaribbean is a Cuban charter and cargo carrier, founded in 1982, which is currently operating 

mainly domestic flights using typical Soviet equipment such as YAK40, Antonov 24 and 26, Ilyushin 14

and 18; in the mid 80's an attempt to expand the fleet and operating capacity was carried out by 

leasing a Zairean registered Mc Donnell Douglas DC8.

This plane, flying under 9Q-CBF markings, was a 1961 built DC 8-53 type originally manufactured as 

frame number 45629 for Northwest Orien Airlines where it was expected to enter service as N807US but

it was not taken up by the US carrier.

In fact it has been delivered on 17th Jannuary 1962 to the Dutch national carrier KLM where it flew

registered as PH-DCN an received the fleet name "Dr Albert Schwetizer", always remaining ownership

of KLM this ship beagn a worldwide tour beeing leased to the following other conpanies: Nigeria Airways

(August to November 1970), Garuda Indonesia (April 1972 to July 1974, renamed "Bali") and Aero Peru

(September 1975 to August 1976, reregistered OB-R1116).

After leasing period to South America KLM retired this ship and sold it to African Safari International

where it served as 5Y-BAS untill November 1981 when it was leased to Seychelles International under 

registration S7-SIA named "Island Bird".

On 26th March 1984 it was placed for storage at Brussel International but only a few months later on

August 84 it received the Zairean registartion and the full colors of Aerocaribbean for whom apparently it 

operated , if at all, only for a very short time beeing in fact retaken over by African Safari already

on November of the same year.

Approximately one year later on December 1985 it was acquired by Aviation Facilities and reported again in

to be stored at Brussel.
