United Express Convair 580 N5808 ca.1985 for FS5.x 95 and 98 ============================================================================= United Express paintwork by: Rafael Zimmermann Original CV-580 design by: Frank Safranek HISTORY: United Express is the commuter division of United Airlines. This division of the major airline covers routes where UA can't get with a jet, or to cities with less passenger traffic. United Express appeared prior to the US deregulation by around 1978, and since that time, it used several sorts of aircraft. The EMB-110 Bandeirante, Shorts 360, Jetstream 31/41, EMB-120 Brasilia, CV-580 and many others were UEX fleet aircraft. The CV-580 was introduced right after the fusion between Colorado's carrier, Aspen Airways into UEX, by early 80's. The 580 was used primary in Colorado routes, filling the marked that belonged to Aspen Airways. WHAT IS THE CONVAIR 580? The CV-580 is a conversion of the original basis of the older versions -240/-340/-440 powered by piston engines to a new turboprop engined aircraft. The appearence is basicaly the same, with onle the big nacelles of the Allison 501-D13 engines. The 1st deliveries of the new plane occured by May 1960, to Frontier, North Central and Allegheny. The results of this conversion were fantastic, including the raised cruise speed now to 342 mph, from the 248 originals and the increase in the range, now to 2800 mi from the original 2000 ones. The success came soon, and the 580 remanined as a good commuter plane until mid 80's. Most of major American carriers used the plane, such as Frontier, Republic, American Eagle and United Express. Other conversions followed the succsess of the 580, but in a smaller proportion, as the CV-600, using the RR Dart engines.
