RSA Data Security, Inc., and Trusted Information Systems, Inc., are pleased to provide TIS/PEM, a reference implementation of Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM). In order to foster acceptance of PEM and provide the community with a usable, working version of this technology, TIS/PEM is being made available for broad use on the following basis. TIS/PEM is distributed in source code form, with all modules written in the C programming language. It runs on many UNIX derived platforms, including BSD, System V, NeXT, and ULTRIX. It is currently integrated with the following user interfaces: Version 6.8.3 of the Rand MH Message Handling system and XMH. It's modularity should make it easy to integrate into other mail user agents. TIS/PEM is a product of Trusted Information Systems, Inc. and is made available with the cooperation of RSA Data Security, Inc. TIS/PEM's distribution and use are governed by a license, a copy of which is included in this directory (LICENSE) and a copy of which is included with the distribution. TIS/PEM cannot be distributed outside the United States or Canada, nor can it be distributed to anyone who is not a U.S. or Canadian citizen and does not have a U.S. "green card." (These are U.S. State and Commerce Department requirements because RSA and DES are export-controlled technologies.) If you meet the country/citizenship requirements and agree to the license, you can obtain the current version of TIS/PEM (7.0) by getting the file dist/pem-9a96ee/p-7.0.tar.Z (full path is /pub/PEM/dist/pem-9a96ee/p-7.0.tar.Z) The dist directory is a blind directory (you can't see into it) and the subdirectory (pem-XXXXXX) changes periodically. The name will be valid for at least ten minutes after you retrieve this file. If you cannot get the file, read the latest README file to get the new directory name. If you specify a path (directories as well as file name) for the remote file name when you issue your FTP get command, specify a local file name as well. Otherwise, your ftp client may try to save the file using the same path that you specified for the remote file name and, since it probably doesn't exist on your system, you'll get a "No such file or directory" message. p-7.0.tar.Z is a compressed tar file that must be transferred in binary mode. Uncompressing and untarring p-7.0.tar.Z will produce a source tree rooted at pem-7.0. Read the INSTALL file to get started. MH is no longer distributed with TIS/PEM. If you don't already have a copy of MH version 6.8.3, a compressed tar file can be found on this server in /pub/PEM/other/mh-6.8.3.tar.Z. TIS maintains the electronic-mail users' group tispem-users@tis.com for discussion of TIS/PEM. To join, send electronic mail to tispem-users-request@tis.com TIS/PEM technical questions, license issues, bug reports, etc. should be addressed to tispem-support@tis.com
