Revisions to the Fixed Quests for ZAngband 2.2.x as made by Jonathan Ellis. A note to the maintainer of the site: these files belong in the Patch directory, not the Variant directory, when moved out of Incoming. Instructions for use: (1) Download and unzip the files. (2) If your copy of ZAngband is version 2.2.6 or earlier, rename the file "K223info.txt" to "k_info.txt" and delete "k228info.txt". If your copy of ZAngband is version 2.2.7 or 2.2.8, rename the file "k228info.txt" to "k_info.txt" and delete "K223info.txt". If your copy of ZAngband is one of the development versions (2.3.x), I'm not sure what's going on so you'll have to work it out for yourself. Using the patch in version 2.3.x as if it was 2.2.8 MAY work, if the ZAngband DevTeam haven't mucked around with the fixed quests or changed the order of the monsters and items in r_info.txt, k_info.txt and a_info.txt yet. This will NOT work with ZAngband 2.1.x or earlier, which did not have fixed quests. (3) If you are in the middle of a game, and you are currently in one of the towns or a fixed quest, open up the game and leave the quest (you may complete it, or not) and town. (The changes to each town will take effect next time you enter the town in question: if you are in a town when you make the changes, they will not take effect until you leave the town and re-enter it. Likewise with quests.) It is best if (a) your character is in the dungeon, or (b) you have no characters in the middle of an adventure. (4) Copy the contents of the folder to your /lib/edit folder. Delete the files a_info.raw and k_info.raw from your /lib/data folder. (5) Play. ################################################################# The following changes have been made: - For players of version 2.2.3 and earlier, new fixed quests have been added, most of them written by Shayne Steele but three of them by myself (Jonathan Ellis). You can get them at the Inn (Outpost town), the Thieves Guild (Morivant town), a couple of extra ones at the Castle in each place, and at the Trump Tower (Morivant) and from the two back entrances to the Temple (Telmora), which lead to shops that cater for Life and Death Magic respectively. There are several new artifacts that exist as rewards for these quests. - Some of the "introduction", "reward" and "failure" texts have been rewritten to look more as if they come from, for instance, the Inn or Thieves Guild. No more of this "oh dear, you've failed, now try another one" pussyfooting around. :-) - There are now nodes of Life, Death and Trump magic. The first two are accessible from Telmora (whose Temple is now home to both the Paladins Guild and the Order of the Black Friars, champions of Life and Death magic respectively): the latter from the Trump Tower in Morivant. Anyone may attempt these quests, but only practicioners of the right type of magic will find the reward worthwhile as it is (as for Sorcery, Nature and Chaos) the final dungeon spellbook of that type of magic. - For those of you playing version 2.2.8, the Dark Elven Lords quest is now attached to the Thieves Guild in Morivant instead of the Inn in Outpost. It is also nastier by having one extra monster added, who is out of depth for the quest :-) He's the Big Boss of the dark elven plot to drive the Thieves Guild out of business and take over the crime business in the area. - The second and third levels of the Tower quest have been made a little nastier by making them of a deeper equivalent dungeon depth. - The first quest (Thieves Hideout) is now rather larger in scale than the original one which had only four monsters. This has been taken from the thieves.map file in the windows version of ZAngband 2.2.3d (also present in at least one known version of PernBand.) - Rewards for certain fixed quests have been changed. The City under the Sea gets a reward at last (a Ring of Extra Attacks, no less). Doom 2 gets a Ring of Speed. The Spawning Pits and Royal Crypt get Artifact Creation. The Thieves Hideout reward is class-specific (mages get wand of magic missile, priests get a mace, etc.) Eric gets a Potion of Life. Micro$oft gets a Balance Dragon Scale Mail. Water Cave gets a Ring of Lordly Protection. - Death Priests as well as Paladins get the Assault on Montsalvat quest: other classes get the Killing Fields instead. The reward in each case is an amulet of reflection, and both lead directly to Eric. That's all folks. -JLE
