PC-SPIRS v3.4 Release Notes INTRODUCTION ------------ The PC-SPIRS v3.4 software has been designed to eliminate the memory problems that occurred in PC-SPIRS v3.3. In addition, it includes the following features: Jumpstarting: - The software accesses only those letters specified in a jumpstart command. - It no longer searches all drives for SPLHA files - It provides a database selection screen when jumpstarting to different databases. Clearing Marked Records: - A 'Clear marked records?' prompt appears after a marked set is printed or downloaded. Extended (XMS) Memory Support: - Expanded (EMS) memory is no longer required. Subdirectory Support: - The software can check subdirectories for SilverPlatter databases, which means the user only needs to map one drive for all SilverPlatter databases (Please note: CD-NET and SCSI Express now support this type of access). REQUIREMENTS ------------ Below are the minimum hardware requirements for PC-SPIRS v3.4: * 80286 IBM-compatible PC * 1 MB RAM with 500 KB of free conventional memory * Monochrome video * MS-DOS or PC-DOS v3.1 or higher * 4 MB free hard disk space * MSCDEX v2.1 or higher (CD-ROM Extensions may not be required for some network installations) * ISO 9660 CD-ROM drive that can read 680 MB of data * One low density floppy drive * Parallel port for printer * Please note that this software cannot be used as an ERL client. INSTALLING PC-SPIRS v3.4 ------------------------ 1. Create a temporary directory on the local hard disk: MD C:\TEMP 2. Copy the PCSP34.EXE file into this directory. 3. Change to the temporary directory and extract the PC-SPIRS v3.4 installation program: C: CD \TEMP PCSP34.EXE 4. Once the files have been extracted, start the installation program by entering: INSTALL 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Once the software is installed, you can delete the temporary directory and any files it contains. SUBDIRECTORY ACCESS ------------------- The following instructions will configure PC-SPIRS to access databases located in subdirectories: 1. Map a drive letter to the volume containing SilverPlatter databases. 2. Make note of each subdirectory that contains a database. The subdirectory name must match the volume label of its compact disc. For example, if a CINAHL disc has the volume label NUD6, it must be located in the NUD6 subdirectory. 3. Change to the PC-SPIRS directory and edit the SPIRS.CFG file using a DOS text editor. 4. At the end of the file is the CORE.VOLPATHS parameter. Add the path of each disc's subdirectory to this parameter and separate them with a comma. For example: CORE.VOLPATHS=G:\NUD6,G:\ML04,G:\ML6A,G:\ML6B,G:\ML6C Please note that instead of listing each subdirectory, you can use a wildcard character to search all the subdirectories on a particular drive: CORE.VOLPATHS=G:\* 5. There is a CORE.MAGDRIVE parameter near the CORE.VOLPATHS setting. Ensure that it is set as follows: CORE.MAGDRIVE=1 Once this is done, PC-SPIRS will check each subdirectory in the list for a SilverPlatter database.
